NWA Update: April 25, 2012

NWA Art Squared Visual Verse Poster
Poster by Janet Kvammen

All of the information artists need is either on the previous email and or on Janet’s poster.

What is new is that we are going to have several poets read their poems during the opening. We have to work the details out but roughly 3–5 poets will read around 7:15 in The Network Hub.

Also, on the three following Friday nights, the networkhub would like to hold coffee house style poem reading sessions. As usual, details will follow but I think just having poems read at the opening will add to the occasion. If any artist has a painting they would like to donate to the show for a raffle fund raiser, please bring it on Thursday to the drop off.

This Thursday, April 26, at the My Mind Gallery, 42 Begbie Street is an art opening by Tim Nugent. I visited with him today and the opening sounds like it could be quite an interesting event. His show runs until April 31. The opening is from 5 until 9 with an accordion performance around 7 pm.

At least 6 NWA members are going; if you are not doing anything else, come out and socialize. Creating art is one thing; learning how to network and sell your art is another necessary skill.

Also, a reminder that the Arts Council Gallery show, Inspired by Words, closes this Saturday, April 28, with a reception between 1 and 3 pm. Come out and support your fellow NWA members who participated.

With free wine who can resist?

NWA Update: April 17, 2012

Hello Everyone.

We had 35 members in attendance at the April 4 meeting. We are now up to 94 members in total.

The May Shows

  • ART SQUARED: May 4, 5, 6
  • VISUAL VERSE: May 4, 5, 6 – May 31 in

The deadline for entries is this Friday, April 20.

All pictures are to be dropped off at The River Market, 810 Quayside Drive, on Thursday, May 3 between 5 and 7 pm. Enter from either side and go up the escalator. We will be up at the top waiting.

The Art Squared pictures do not require wires unless you have used a cradleboard in the shadow effect; then you need a wire.

All Visual Verse pictures need wires and must be ready to hang.

Please have your pictures looking as professional as possible. If your picture cannot be hung when you drop it off on Thursday, you will be taking it home with you.

Our Display Team will hang the pictures Friday afternoon.

The opening is 6 pm until 8:30 pm.

Please bring some finger food to go along with the wine and water NWA will provide. If you want to bring some more wine that is ok with us.

On Sunday at 5 pm and not a minute earlier, all the pictures come down. You will have until 6 pm to pick up your pictures.

The EX needs volunteers to help keep watch over the weekend, so on Thursday we will have a sign up sheet with 2 hour time slots. Please schedule some time so you can have a closer look at the art and get to know some of the other artists.

Our next meeting is May 2, 7 pm at the New West Library basement meeting room.

Any last minute concerns or questions can be dealt with then. We can also start planning for the Aug 28 to Sept 29 show at the Arts Council Gallery in Queen’s Park.

NWA Update: April 2, 2012

Our next meeting is this Wednesday, April 4, 2012. 7:00 p.m. in the basement of the New West Library. At this point we have about 120 pieces for the Art Squared Show and about 34 pieces for the Visual Verse Show.

After the meeting I will send out another newsletter with a complete fact sheet. There will be almost a dozen wooden cradles for sale so bring some cash.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 3, Candice James, our Poet Laureate of New West, will help celebrate National Poetry Month at the New West Library at 6:30 p.m. with several featured guests and an open mic.

Also opening on April 3 – 28 is the Inspired by Words Exhibition at the Gallery in Queen’s Park. I’m not sure, but the official opening will probably be Sunday afternoon.

The opening for our second four person show at was another success. Thanks to the artists involved; Judith Copland, Irene Lacharite, Norm Coridor and Rob Fee.

About 50 people showed up to view the art, drink wine and eat some tasty food.

From my perspective as President it was quite disappointing that apart from some of the Executive and the artists themselves, only two other members of NWA showed up to support their fellow artists. These openings are a great way to socialize and network and get to know what is going on in the art community.

As part of the NWA mandate, “aiming to celebrate, encourage and stimulate visual artists through connection, education and promotion.” it’s hard to make connections if people do not show up for NWA Events.

Hope to see you Wednesday.
