Bio
My work is about the creation of depth and exploration of colour and contrast through expressive mediums. I work primarily in bold colors of acrylics with stencils, collage and print-making elements. My studio practice is evolving and is an application of various sizes of brush and pallet knives with paint markers and tool marks.
Although I grew up on Vancouver Island, my art career has Prairie connections. I am a graduate of Alberta College of Art and Design and completed my BFA in 2001. I had the privilege of studying with Derek Michael Besant, Alexandra Haeseker, Richard Halliday and Maureen Enns. Always something of an iconoclast, I took up painting first while in the drawing program there. While in Calgary I was nominated to represent young Alberta artists at the Canada Winter Games in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland.
I also had the privilege of being nominated by Douglas Haynes to attend the Emma Lake Artist Workshop. Karen Wilkin, the famed New York art critic was in attendance there and she gifted me a letter saying that I was “the real thing”. I’m primarily inspired by Abstract Expressionism. My influences include the Automatistes, Otto Rogers, Doug Haynes, Richard Halliday and Grace Hardigan.
Artist Statement
“Epicentre”, “Sky Trees” and “Cocoon Moon” are named after songs by Solar Fields and Carbon Based Life Forms. This music inspires my work and often the beats in the music impact my mark making. Colour in my environment is very impactful and I am drawn to blues and greens as I see these colours daily in my surroundings but to me they convey both peace and solitude.
