Artist Biography
I am an artist based in New Westminster, where I have lived since moving to Canada from the UK in 2006. As a child I loved to draw birds and horses. However as a young adult I discovered a passion for photography with a particular emphasis on monochromatic images that I developed and printed myself in the darkroom at Gateshead College. I was greatly inspired by industrial artifacts, architecture and public art, always looking for strong, unusual and abstract compositions. As digitisation of the medium increased, which coincided with my move to Canada, I felt the call to return to subject matters to do with nature and fine art methods. I enrolled in watercolour and drawing classes at the Anvil Centre and Shadbolt before signing up for oil painting classes at the Anvil Centre and at Place Des Arts. I continue to explore many mediums including photography, graphite, charcoal, ink, soft pastel, watercolours and oil painting. I have an extensive portfolio on Instagram @charmingdeva where I have been posting my art since 2012.
Artist Statement
I have always had a keen interest in, and affinity with the natural world. In my work I attempt to capture the beauty of nature and the emotions it creates with particular emphasis on the play of light and colour. My goal is for the viewer to appreciate the intrinsic beauty in their environment from the intimacy of a floral study to grand sweeping landscapes and all the fauna it contains.
